What are Arousal and Anxiety
Arousal refers to the physical and mental stimulation a person experiences including: racing heart, shallow breathing, sweaty palms, tunnel vision, and possibly confusion (1). An athlete may experience arousal in response to either a positive or negative event. When an athlete experiences high arousal, they may doubt their ability to cope with this increased physiological state and interpret this arousal negatively, which results in feelings of anxiety. In general, anxiety is defined as a negative emotional state a person experiences that is characterized by worrying, apprehension, and high arousal symptoms (2).
