Goal Setting

Goal setting is one of the most commonly used psychological skills by coaches and athletes, regardless of their experience or exposure to psychological skills training. In fact, a review of the psychology literature reported that “the beneficial effect of goal setting on task performance is one of the most replicable findings” (p.145) (1). Although many athletes and coaches set athletic goals for performance-based reasons, a number of other benefits have been identified which explain why goal setting is effective in sport.
