What are Masters athletes? While opinions differ, this term is often employed to describe older active individuals — individuals who are more than 35 years old, participate in sports specifically designed for older adults, and engage in varying degrees of competition, from recreational to highly competitive levels.
The more serious Masters athletes tend to have coaches. Moreover, research indicates a positive relationship between training with a coach and having self-determined motives (e.g., they enjoy their sport, being an athlete is an important part of their identity) among Masters athletes, especially for females, as well as on placing more importance on self improvement (Medic et al., 2012). Also, serious-minded Masters athletes are prepared to devote significant amounts of time to their training.
